Blogging to Crickets? Don't Lose Heart

Some days it seems that the world is silent, and no one cares what you have to say.  When you are starting your foray into social media, especially if you are doing it part-time, it is definitely hard to get people to engage with you.  In my case, re-starting my social media exploits under my own identity and brand (versus the hundreds of tweets and blogs I have written under other names), it sometimes feels like singing to an empty house.  I'm enjoying the singing, but the sound of applause (or even a little clap now and then) would be wonderful.  So, I am telling you, I know how it feels.

I followed Joe Pulizzi's excellent advice and went to Klout today to activate my profile and see how I'm doing out there.  Read his advice and learn more about Klout here.  Make Marketing Sing has been active for five days, and my Klout score is 19.  That's not too bad.  The score updates every day, so I'm anxious to see how this develops.  Pretty exciting to watch, and to learn more about this program.

So, there's a message here.  Don't lose heart.  Whether you are starting out, or starting over, if you are sharing valuable information, someone will eventually care.  Social media is not instant gratification - unless perhaps you have a celebrity status that most of us lack.  Social media participation is an act of love, and an act of sharing, collaboration, and leadership, and most of all, an act of patience.

I am absolutely certain it is worth it.  And the crickets will become less shrill over time.

CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP <grin>
